I-9 and Workforce Immigration Compliance

Worksite enforcement for improper I-9 completion or employment of unauthorized workers has dramatically escalated, resulting in increased issuance and large civil fines, as well as criminal penalties in some cases. We advise employers on I-9 compliance and the E-Verify system.

  • I-9
    • The I-9 must be completed within 3 business days of an employee’s first day of work. The employee provides the employer with documents establishing both identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. The employee can choose which documents to present from the list of acceptable I-9 documents.
  • E-Verify
    • E-Verify is an Internet-based system administered by the government. It compares information from an employee’s I-9 to data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility.

      Once an employer has enrolled in E-Verify, it must be used for all new employees. Companies enrolled in E-Verify can extend a foreign student’s optional practical training (OPT) from 12 to 29 months for graduates with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees.

      Our services also include an internal review of client’s employment verification system and/or developing an internal review system for our clients. We also advise clients on responding to government inquiries.
